What does debt consolidation do? More importantly, can it REALLY remove or reduce the interest that built up over the last 5 years?

When doing a search for debt consolidation services, I get THOUSANDS of results. Which debt consolidation services are better?

Detailed answers would be appreciated.
Update: Am I correct to assume that if I leave the debt as it is, I can have it completely wiped off my credit card two years from now as if it never happened?

Allison

ninfragile19 asked:

Many people are telling me that regardless of that $6,000, now’s the time to buy. My plan is to systematically pay off that card while saving at the same time to have an emergency reserve should push come to shove and I’m in a financial bind. I want to go into the home buying process with only my student loan debt to worry about. Outside of paying off the card in its entirety before purchasing a home, what other options do I have? With the market the way it is and my good credit score (730-ish, debt-to-income ratio around 10%), I’m sure there are options available to help me obtain a home faster.
I should make it known that:

1) I live with my folks who aren’t charging me rent.

2) I have an open to buy of $25,000 in credit.

3) I don’t consider myself in financial trouble. I have a 401K and a T-Rowe money market account I’m making continuous contributions to.

Ray

molly asked:

My mom is pushing me to join the Navy but my other family is pushing for college (Univ of South Carolina). I will not have any financial support from my family. I have given serious thought towards joining, and I wouldn’t mind it, but I can’t help but feel like I should be going to college. Yes I can use the GI bill but realistically, I would get my degree faster going full time and I’ve always wanted to be an officer. I’m academically competitive but scholarships are so hard to get and I really don’t want to take out outrageous loans. What is the smartest thing to do that will put me in a better position in the long term?
I have spoken with a recruiter. I am aware of NROTC and I will apply once I hear if I am accepted or not. I went to MEPS to be processed recently but I was 3 pounds overweight and the rate I wanted was over manned anyway so I basically took it as a sign to re-evaluate and see what I can do. I will either attend USC or join the Navy.

Veronica
